Quantum-defect-assisted Polarization Mode Coupling in a Fiber Amplifier

Abstract

We have observed, for the first time, quantum-defect-assisted polarization mode coupling in a fiber amplifier. This is a manifestation of stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering. The frequency-dependent gain and loss are characterized for the first time.
