Abstract
New fibers are being designed to carrying many spatially multiplexed signals, and thus drastically increase the capacity per fiber in long-haul communications. Current design research includes quite different approaches to managing the tradeoff between crosstalk and mode density. Fiber irregularity and length variation have a crucial on performance, and will ultimately determine the performance limits of space-division-multiplexing fibers.
