Disentangling surface and bulk contributions to high-harmonic generation from solids

Abstract

We demonstrate that surface space-charges alter the large amplitude oscillations of electron-hole pairs during high-harmonic generation from silicon, resulting in the emission of weak even-order harmonics. Our results extend surface nonlinear optics to the non-perturbative regime.
