Limits of Plasmonic Enhancement of Third Order Nonlinear Optical Effects

Abstract

We present a rigorous theory to show that while tremendous enhancement of χ(3) can be obtained in nanoplasmonic metamaterials, the overall efficiency remains very small, making them irrelevant for photonic switching and wavelength conversion applications.
