Mastering Ultrafast UV Light in Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fibres

Abstract

Broadband ultraviolet (UV) radiation is of paramount relevance in many disparate fields such as time-resolved spectroscopy, chemistry and materials science, since most molecules feature strong outer-shell electronic excitations in this spectral range. However, the generation, manipulation and point-to-point transport of ultrafast UV light are far from trivial and hence the number of efficient, compact and widely-tunable UV sources is rather limited. In the last decade, broadband-guiding hollow-core photonic crystal fibres (HC-PCFs) filled with gases emerged as excellent platforms for UV nonlinear optics owing to their high damage threshold and pressure-tunable dispersion landscape [1]. As a result, HC-PCFs pumped in the near-infrared enabled several breakthroughs such as generation of ultrashort UV dispersive waves [2] and broadband UV supercontinua [3].
