Quantum information interface between telecommunication wavelengths and Yb+-dipole transition

Abstract

The ability to change the color of a photonic quantum state while preserving its other quantum properties is a crucial prerequisite to connect dissimilar stationary qubit systems in future quantum networks [1]. In particular, it facilitates to interface the wavelengths at which quantum information can be generated, stored or processed locally (which frequently lie in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible spectrum) to the wavelengths of low loss transmission in optical fibers (telecommunication wavelengths). In this respect, the process of coherent frequency conversion [2] can be used and numerous quantum light level frequency converters between the red and infrared spectral range have been realized so far. A particularly interesting system for quantum information processing is a trapped Ytterbium-Ion (Yb+) with its S12P12 dipole transition in the UV spectral region at 369.5nm [3]. Interfacing this transition with a telecommunication wavelength is a challenging task because of the large energy gap that has to be bridged. It either requires a multi-stage conversion, as proposed in [4], or a direct conversion process, involving a strong pump field in the green spectral region.
