Abstract

Thulium-based fiber lasers, which currently deliver multi-100 MW of pulse peak power at sub-500 fs pulse duration [1], are evolving to promising candidates for applications in high-field physics such as high-harmonic generation (HHG) with photon energies beyond the water window (>300 eV) [2]. In addition to further power scaling, which is currently the subject of intense research, nonlinear pulse compression is an interesting approach for improving the output characteristics of ultrafast Tm-based fiber lasers with a view to efficiently driving HHG. This technique has already become state-of-the-art in high-performance ytterbium-based fiber laser systems at 1 µm emission wavelength [3], which mostly employ gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers and the know-how can be adapted to Tm-based fiber laser systems.
