The effect of mode instabilities (MI) is the most limiting phenomenon for the scaling of the average power of current state-of-the-art fiber lasers and amplifies. Consequently, intense research focused on methods to overcome or to increase the current average power limits has been carried out in the last years [1,2]. However, despite several theoretical approaches on how to increase the MI threshold, there have been no reports on any significant experimental improvement leading to new record power levels of fiber laser systems based on a single emitter . One of the reasons for this is that until now an important piece for the theoretical understanding of mode instabilities was missing.
