Simultaneous Reproduction of Two Datapages for Increasing Data-Transfer Rate in Holographic Data Storage

Abstract

Holographic data storage can have high data-transfer rate and large capacity. A high data-transfer rate is expected since digital data is arranged in two dimensional data arrays (called datapages), and these data can be recorded and reproduced at once. Large capacity is possible since a lot of datapages can be recorded at the same position in the hologram medium by changing the incident angle of the reference beam. In our previous study, we achieved a data-transfer rate of 500 Mbps while reproducing [1]. In addition, we demonstrated real-time playback of beyond high definition video signals [2]. The data-transfer rate while reproducing depends on the amount of data in a datapage and the number of datapages reproduced per unit time. When the number of pixels and frame rate in a camera detecting datapages increases, the data-transfer rate increases. In addition, if we can increase the number of reproduced datapages per unit time without increasing the frame rate, the higher data-transfer rate will be obtained. In this study, we propose simultaneous reproduction of two datapages, which enables a data-transfer rate of twice that of the conventional method.
