Abstract
External optical feedback in laser systems is a topic of great interest both in the fundamental and applied sciences. Semiconductor lasers have been the focus of much attention given their ubiquity in modern technology. Conventional semiconductor lasers based on quantum well and bulk material are notoriously unstable when undergoing external feedback [1,2]. In recent years lasers based on quantum dot (QD) semiconductor materials have been the focus of many studies revealing a much greater stability in the feedback configuration [3,4]. In this work we uncover a new regime for such devices: namely, the generation of dark pulse trains. Dark solitons propagate without deformation in media with normal dispersion making them potentially attractive for various optical communication schemes [5]. In this work we report on experimentally and theoretically obtained dark pulse generation in a quantum dot laser with optical feedback.
