Abstract

Due to the recent development of pump sources emitting in the cyan-blue spectral range [1,2] a variety of trivalent rare earth ions became of interest for the realization of direct laser oscillation in the visible spectral region. The Dieke-diagram [3] reveals, that many trivalent rare earth ions can be excited in the spectral region between 19,000 and 26,000 cm−1 (cf. Fig. 1). In this contribution we report on the requirements for visible laser operation and show our latest results.
