Raman-driven destabilization of giant-chirp oscillators: fundamental limitations to energy scalability

Abstract

A particularly interesting solution to obtain high energy pulses from fiber laser has been found in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) cavities [1,2]. Subsequently many studies have assessed the energy-scalability of ANDi-oscillators suggesting that pulse energy can be increased quasi-linearly by increasing the cavity length (giant-chirp oscillators-GCO) [2]. It is clear that with such a strategy the intra-cavity light-matter interaction length is increased reinforcing nonlinear effects which have been shown to play a detrimental role in long laser cavities by inducing unwanted polarization rotation or stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) [3].
