Abstract
Availability of practical and cost-effective yellow-orange lasers is expected to lead to a surge of developments of many important applications, such as laser guide stars for earth-based telescopes, dermatology, eye surgery and cell imaging [1,2]. Frequency doubled Vertical-External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VECSELs) have recently emerged as the most promising alternative addressing the needs of high-brightness visible laser sources. VECSELs have borrowed the power scaling and cavity concepts developed for solid-state thin-disk oscillators, but at the same time they take advantage of the wavelength versatility offered by semiconductor gain media.
