14GHz Supercontinuum Generation: Calibration Sources for Astronomical Spectrographs

Abstract

Photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) [1] were extensively exploited to study the behavior of light confined to small areas or to engineer novel light sources. Particularly the advent of supercontinuum generation in PCFs resulted in a widespread distribution of PCFs in various research areas [2]. Here, we use submicron-core PCFs to generate a high repetition rate light source promising for applications in astro-metrology [3]. The frequency comb used for the supercontinuum generation is based on a Yb-fiber laser with a fundamental mode spacing of 250 MHz. It is filtered in two steps to a mode separation of 14 GHz by means of three Fabry-Perot cavities (FPCs). The strongest suppressed mode is at 2 GHz (the free spectral range of the first FPC) with a suppression of about 50 dB. After the cavities, the light is amplified to >10W and frequency doubled in a LBO crystal. A power of 300 mW at 526 nm with a bandwidth of 5 nm is obtained. The initial PCF used had a core diameter of 2 μm and a SEM image is shown in the inset of Fig. 1a. We tapered the fibre to various waist diameters, keeping the geometry of the structure preserved. In Fig. 1a we show the group-velocity dispersion curves of the fabricated taper waists, the core sizes ranging from 507 to 565 nm.
