Transitions between regular and chaotic behavior in polarization-stabilized Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers

Abstract

VCSELs are modern semiconductor laser structures that have become standard lasers in optical datacom applications. The characteristic two-dimensional geometry of large-aperture VCSELs makes them an appropriate system to study wave chaos [1] in equivalence to electromagnetic billiard systems. We experimentally investigate the onset of wave chaos below and above the laser threshold in VCSELs with and without integrated polarization control.
