Abstract
So far most of the high-precision surface metrology tasks are conducted by mechanical probes attached to Coordinate Measurement Machines (CMMs). Even though the technical maturity is high, the lack of speed and the requirement to physically touch the object increasingly restricts the field of applications. If tomographic information is needed (for e.g. thickness measurements of semitransparent objects) then it completely breaks down.
