Abstract
Devices based on photonic crystals (PCs) are finding applications in a wide range of fields. Many types of designs have been proposed and optimized for different applications. However, a general analytical approach for designing optimized nanocavities is still lacking. Such an approach would greatly add to our understanding of photonic crystal devices and lead to improved devices. In this work, we extend a previously reported one-dimensional [1] method, to the full plane of the photonic crystal, and apply it to photonic crystal cavity design. We start with a desired held which, for cavities, is chosen according to a simple radiation-density expression ([1]) to minimize total internal reflection losses.
