Abstract
The fundamental nonlinear effect of stimulated Raman scattering, that manifests itself in fibre optics as a spectral conversion of an input electromagnetic wave to the Stokes wave shifted by approximately ~14 THz towards lower frequencies, is widely used in numerous practical applications. In particular, by deploying fibre Bragg gratings at either ends of a fibre span it is possible to form a cavity at the Stokes wavelength, employing the technique of a Raman fibre laser (RFL) [1], Due to high Raman gain and low absorption loss in the transmission window the RFL length might be extremely large [2], Here we demonstrate mode structure of the RFL with ultra-long (up to 84 km) cavity.
