Characterization of volume gratings formed in ZrO2 nanoparticle-dispersed photopolymers

Abstract

Holographic dry photopolymers have been studied for almost four decades because of their attractive properties such as large refractive index modulation (An), ease-to-process, high mechanical flexibility and low cost. We have proposed nanocomposite photopolymers in which inorganic or organic nanoparticles are dispersed to host (meth)acrylate monomers in order to increase An and improve the dimensional stability at the same time. Recently, we reported highly transparent ZrO2 nanoparticle-dispersed photopolymers1 by which more than thirty-fold reduction in the scattering coefficient, as compared with the case of previously reported TiO2 nanoparticle-dispersed photopolymers,2 was achieved. In this paper we describe microscopic characterization of volume holographic gratings fonned in ZrO2 nanoparticle-dispersed photopolymers.
