Abstract
In the past ten years, the ability of the photorefractive effect to self-focus a localized beam at very low laser powers and thereby balancing diffraction during propagation was shown to result in the photorefractive soliton. Due to the wave guiding capability of the photorefractive soliton, future adaptive optical communication devices became a new application field for photorefractive media. These applications are governed by the strong and strongly anisotropic photorefrac-tive nonlinearity.
