Abstract

Laser technology is maturing rapidly and is finding applications in areas such as lùgli resolution spectroscopy, medicine, optical telecomms, metrology, where highly coherent tunable low noise sources are required. Single frequency tunable lùgli-power solid-state lasers or External-cavity VCSELs (VECSELs) [1] rely on intracavity filtering, typically provided by a conventional biréfringent plate used in transmission. A more compact design can be achieved using a reflection filter such as a “Volume Bragg Grating”. It is however not tunable and exhibits significant losses. An attractive prospect would be to realize a tunable epitaxial multilayer reflection filter, to develop highly compact laser cavities such as VECSELs [1].
