Abstract
Efficient, high repetition rate, picosecond lasers of mJ level and high (>1MW) peak power are required in a wide range of applications including environment sensing, laser marking, microsurgery, measurement techniques, range finding, frequency conversion, etc. Such pulses were for last decades generated mainly by flashlamp pumped mode locked lasers with dye saturable absorber used for mode-locking and Q-switching. An attractive alternative is the use of semiconductor saturable absorbers containing high number (10–100) multiple-quantum-wells (MQW). We have recently reported operation of such MQW structures as a passive mode-locker in flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG and Nd:YAP lasers [1].
