Abstract
The new bifunctional crystal Yb-doped RbTiOPO4 or Yb:RTP, codoped with Nb for charge compensation, combines the lasing properties of the Yb-ion with the nonlinear properties of the well-known orthorhombic crystal RTP [1]. It is interesting for the development of compact all-solid-state laser sources in the green, by self-frequency doubling. The Yb-ion possesses a number of advantages over Nd: Longer energy-storage time and smaller quantmn defect, pumping by the optically more robust InGaAs laser diodes operating in the 900-1000 mn range, relatively simple two-manifold structure without absorption losses at the second harmonic, and broader absorption and emission lines.
