Abstract
The recent progress in the growth techniques for quantum-dot structures has led to a wide range of useful devices that are becoming available for applications in opto-electronics and photonics. [1] Broadband absorption/emission characteristics of such devices associated with a QD size distributions together with fast recovery times (<lps) [2] make them especially attractive as a saturable absorbers for ultrashort pulse generation in passively mode-locked solid-state lasers. Here we report on the generation of femtosecond pulses in the l-μm and 1.3-μm spectral regions from Yb:KYW and Cnforsterite lasers, respectively, where InAs/InGaAs quantum- dot based saturable absorber mirrors (QD-SAMs) have been utilised.
