Abstract
Bulk crystal lasers are well-known for their interest in terms of emission cross section and thermal conductivity, but their main drawback is their inaptitude to combine high pump powers and good beam quality. On the other hand, silica fiber lasers show very good thermal management and high beam quality but limited performances for high peak powers because of non-linearity issues. We designed single-crystal fibers to combine the advantages of both structures, by using a thin and long crystal, with low doping concentration. We benefit from the spectroscopic and thermo-mechanical advantages of bulk crystals, and from the pump guiding and the good heat load repartition of doped glass fibers.
