Sensitizing an all-optical ultrasound sensor with a polymer overlayer

Abstract

We exploit the refractive-index (RI)-sensing capabilities of a photonic crystal slab (PCS) and the photoelastic effect in a polymer overlayer to measure ultrasonic signals in water. Using a TM resonance in the PCS device, we obtain an acoustic sensitivity of 4.4×102 nm/MPa.
