Abstract

Two photodiodes are integrated on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) for on-chip measurement of the gain. Coupled waveguides drive fraction of light into photodiodes for gain calculation from photocurrents ratio. The method can easily be implemented in SOA inside photonic integrated circuits.
