Femtosecond Pulsed Z-scan Determination of Nonlinear Optical Absorption of Highly Close-packed Silver Nanoparticle Films

Abstract

The nonlinear optical properties of highly close-packed (fill fraction ~0.74) Ag nanoparticle films were examined according to femtosecond Z-scan measurements. The open-aperture Z-scan traces exhibited the behavior of saturable absorption, which was ascribed to the excitation-induced broadening of the surface plasmon resonance. Furthermore, exceptionally high nonlinear optical absorption coefficients β were found to range from -10−3 to -10−5 cm/W.
