Enhanced optical pump-terahertz probe nonlinearity by nano antenna patterning

Abstract

We demonstrate that nanoresonators on a vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film help amplify the available optical pump- terahertz probe transmission nonlinearity when the VO2 film undergoes insulator – metal phase transition. By virtue of subpicosecond time scale of VO2 phase transition, dramatically enhanced ultrafast control of THz transmission is enabled by moderate optical pump. This is compared to bare VO2 films where no switching dynamics are observed under similar conditions.
