Abstract

A new architecture, which is transmitting a gigabit millimeter-wave band data over wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (WDM-PON) platform, is proposed. It is very important to transmit a broadband data in the millimeter-wave band without a significant change of the conventional WDM-PON architecture because a drastic alteration can make its scheme be an expensive one. Here, a sliced optical sideband based on a 50-GHz spaced arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is used to generate a millimeter-wave band signal as well as a baseband one. Error free transmissions (wired data: BER of 10−12, wireless data: BER of 10−9) of a 2.5-Gb/s wired data and a 1.25-Gb/s wireless data are achieved simultaneously.
