Abstract

Collisionless absoption of ultrashort intense laser pulses in overdense matter and clusters is shown to be accomplished by anharmonic resonance. It is capable of explaining all basic absorption characteristics (phase shifts, high efficiency, fast electrons, polarization differences) and of making valuable predictions for applications.
