Abstract
Mid-IR and THz-waves have attracted great interest in a growing number of applications, such as biomedical imaging, security, illicit-drug detection, and so on. For these applications, coherent and tunable wave sources possess the superior features of narrow linewidth, high output, high coherency and small system size. Various kinds of widely tunable MID-IR and THz-wave parametric sources with these desirable features have been successfully developed. In particular, frequency-random access or rapid frequency tuning with narrow linewidth is of great importance because it provides the capability for rapid acquisition of spectroscopic measurement, spectroscopic imaging, and background-free spectroscopy. The great feature of nonlinear optics based wave-sources is its wide tunability. With the combination of parametric oscillation and difference frequency generation methods, we add another useful feature of frequency-agility. With appropriate combination of nonlinear optical materials and pumping wavelengths, 1-60 THz (300-5 μm) sources are successfully demonstrated
