New mode locking regime in a quantum-dot laser: enhancement by simultaneous cw excited-state emission

Abstract

The beneficial effect of excited-state emission on the ground-state mode locking of a two-section quantum-dot laser has been demonstrated. The pulse durations and phase noise have been reduced significantly as the injection current is increased.
