Abstract

High power LEDs are being developed for many lighting applications, including signaling, signage, automotive (headlights and taillights) and solid state lighting. White LEDs made from blue or UV LEDs and a conversion phosphor now have efficacies in excess of 30 Lm/W in production with demonstrations of over 80 Lm/W in the lab, making them among the most energy efficient lighting sources available. To get high luminous output, high power LEDs dissipate between 1 and 5 W per package with even higher power packages (> 10 W) under development.
