Modulational instability induced by loss dispersion in optical fiber

Abstract

We obtain a closed-form expression of modulational-instability gain in an optical fiber with arbitrary loss/gain and group-velocity dispersions. It reveals that instability is induced by the loss dispersion even in the normal group-velocity dispersion regime.
