Consolidation and homogeneity of sol-gel Er-doped waveguide amplifiers

Abstract

This paper presents evidence that extensive heat treatment on sol-gel waveguide amplifiers drastically reduces the levels of erbium ion inversion. Furthermore, porosity measurements are presented which indicate the optimum annealing conditions for glass consolidation.
