Surface-Mode Behavior of Air-Core Photonic-Bandgap Fibers

Abstract

The relation between core size and surface modes in photonic-bandgap fibers is analyzed through numerical simulations. We present a simple criterion to predict the presence of surface modes and identify novel geometries that support no surface modes.
