Surface-emitting photonic-crystal distributed-feedback lasers

Abstract

It is shown that there exists an optimized parameter space that allows a large device area (1 mm2) patterned with a photonic-crystal distributed-feedback (PCDFB) grating to display single-mode lasing in a diffraction-limited circular beam emitted from the surface, with an external differential efficiency of 30–60%.
