Abstract
The molecular design features required to achieve large second- and third-order nonlinear optical efforts will be reviewed. Key experimental and theoretical findings about consequences of substituting donors and acceptor on conjugated p-electron systems on the structural, electronic and optical properties will be described as they pertain to chromophores for electro-optical applications and two-photon absorption.
