Abstract
We have completed the manufacture, space-qualification and delivery of three flight, diode- pumped solid-state lasers for the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS),1 the sole instrument for the ICESat (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite) mission scheduled to launch in early 2002. GLAS will launch carrying three transmitters used in series, to meet the mission lifetime of 3 years (5 year goal). These transmitters (Figure 1) represent the most advanced solid- state lasers developed for space applications.
