Abstract

Semiconductor optical amplifiers offer a compact and economic means of signal gain with the potential for nanosecond time-scale power adjustment also required for packet routing and switching applications.1 While the noise performance of semiconductor optical amplifiers approaches that of fibre amplifiers, the distortion threshold is considerably lower leading to a compromised dynamic range.2 Gain clamping has therefore been proposed as a means to increase the distortion threshold.
