Abstract
Materials such as Yb:SFAP are a promising gain medium for future high-repetition-rate, diode- pumped fusion lasers for energy applications. Beam-smoothing requirements dictate, however, that these lasers have an amplified FM bandwidth of ~ 1/3 THz prior to frequency conversion, which is comparable to the gain bandwidth of Yb:SFAP. Therefore, gain narrowing in these amplifiers will reduce the on-target bandwidth and produce severe, potentially damaging amplitude modulation (AM) at the output of the laser system.
