Abstract

The precise synthesis, control and manipulation of optical pulse shapes have become increasingly important for many scientific areas. The most commonly used techniques for pulse shaping make use of simple linear filtering (amplitude and/or phase) of the original pulse and involve bulk or micro-optics configurations, planar waveguides, or fiber Bragg gratings.1 The degree of complexity in implementation depends on the particular waveform to be synthesized and in fact, some particular waveforms require amplitude/ phase specifications for the filtering stage that are impractical.
