Abstract
In the past there has been a continuous search for new nonlinear materials. A promising new nonlinear crystal is monoclinic BiB3O6 (BIBO). Meanwhile large size crystals of BIBO have been grown with good optical quality.1 The promising nonlinear properties of this crystal were first demonstrated by type I (ee → o) phasematched second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1064 nm laser pulses. 2 The frequency doubling indicated an effective nonlinearity of 3 pm/V, almost comparable to the one of KTP and three times larger than that of LBO. Because of the high optical quality and high nonlinearity the use of this crystal in other nonlinear processes and devices should be very attractive.
