Abstract

Spectral-spatial holographic (SSH) materials are ideal for performing a variety of high bandwidth analog correlations because of potential band-widths over 10 GHz, correlation lengths of several microseconds, and large dynamic range. One application of particular interest is range correlation, where an N bit radar sequence is transmitted and an antenna receives a delayed return signal from the target attenuated and buried in noise. An analog correlation of the received and reference signals yields the round-trip delay τ21, and thus the target’s range. Coherent accumulation of a spectral grating, representing the correlation function, has the added ability to increase signal-to-noise by averaging over multiple shots, and to resolve Doppler shifts of the target. Here, we demonstrate large bandwidth (0.5 GHz) range correlation in an SSH material under practical conditions. Adaptation of this work to a rangeDoppler correlator over the same bandwidth is a prospect of future work.
