Abstract

Electrooptic single-sideband (SSB) modula- tors/optical frequency shifters are important devices in many optoelectronics systems.1-3 In this report, we propose novel guided-wave electrooptic SSB modulators consisting of a pair of traveling-wave electrodes and a Mach-Zehnder waveguide. Adopting the periodically domain-inverted structure with a spatial shift to LiNbO3 or LiTaO3 traveling-wave modulators, the modulation phase and the modulation index can be controlled arbitrary so that the SSB modulation characteristics are obtained with one microwave modulation signal and a DC bias signal.
