Abstract
In high bit-rate optical communication systems, the small tolerance to the group-velocity dispersion (GVD) of fibers is one of the most crucial considerations. Since the GVD variation easily exceeds the tolerable range with changes in temperature and residual strain, the bit-error rate performance can be perturbed by environmental conditions. For reliable operation of high bit-rate systems, therefore, the dispersion monitoring and the adaptive GVD control are indispensable.
