Abstract

Survival and quality of live of patients with supratentorial cerebral glioma have been shown to improve with a more extensive surgical resection. However, it is difficult in many cases to delineate the extension of tumor into the surrounding brain tissue. Therefore, the studies aiming at application of light induced fluorescence methods for brain tumour diagnostics are of great importance. Methods based on observation of tissue autofluorescence1−4 show too low degree of specificity to be applied for brain tumour diagnostics. Another approach based on the use of endogenous 5-aminolevlinic acid (ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX5,6 as the fluorophore marking the malignant or premalignant brain tissues has been shown to be applicable for glioma C6 and 9L.7,8 We present, for the first time to our knowledge, observation of in vivo fluorescence of 5-ALA-induced PpIX in 101.8 brain tumours. All the experiments reported have been performed in the conditions close to intraoperative
