Geneiation of sub-6-fs blue pulses by QPM-SHG pulse compression

Abstract

With the availability of reliable sources of short pulses at 800 nm, there is a trend to convert these pulses to other wavelength ranges in the visible, UV, and infrared. SHG, being conceptually the simplest wavelength conversion scheme, has allowed the generation of blue pulses down to 8.3 fs.1 Doubling of sub-10-fs pulses requires careful control of dispersive broadening and group velocity mismatch (GVM) between the first and the second harmonic (FH and SH). With conventional birefringent phasematching, GVM dictates the use of extremely short crystal lengths, which typically result in poor conversion efficiencies.
