Abstract

In this paper we present laser designs that begin to address the issues of size, cost and fragility of femtosecond sources. We have shown that it is possible to reduce the threshold of femtosecond Cr:LiSAF lasers sufficiently that cheap singlespatial-mode, narrow-stripe red laser diodes (output power-50m W) become viable pump sources.
